How to Improve Brain Health

An ActivCare Training Blog

Throughout the course of our life, our brain is constantly changing to learn new information, make new neuro-connections and repair broken ones. This is a process known as ‘brain plasticity’ and it is crucial to look after our brain health to keep this process working as efficiently as possible.

At ActivCare, we are passionate about keeping our brains and bodies healthy. Try some of our favourite brain boosting activities below with your residents!

Host a Chess Tournament

Chess is a brilliant activity for stimulating the brain and has been proven to:

  • Increase IQ
  • Improve memory function
  • Exercise both sides of the brain
  • Help prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia

Why not teach your residents how to play and have a Chess Tournament with a prize for the winner?

Create a Book Club

Hosting a book club for residents will not only keep their brains active, but it will give them more opportunities to be social which is essential for their wellbeing.

Each month choose a different book and the book club could get together weekly to discuss the book over a cuppa.

Socialising helps create and nurture connections with others which has been linked to lower blood pressure, lower risk of dementia and longer life expectancy.

Get Moving

Exercise of any kind is beneficial for brain health as it:

  • Increases oxygen flow
  • Supports the growth of new nerve cells and connections
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Improves cholesterol levels

Organise a Seated Dance and Exercise class within your setting for your residents to enjoy.
